About Catemaco

Founded in the year 1774, the mystic town of "âburned houses"â belonged to the province of Santiago de Tuxtla. It wasn't until the end of the XIX century when it was raised to the category of villa and in 1966 officially declared City of Catemaco.
Of abundant natural resources, the city is characterized by the vast variety of flora and fauna surrounding the Lake of Catemaco and its mountains. Hence, most of the zone is protected in the ecological reserve of Los Tuxtlas, the municipality of Veracruz it belongs to; besides some private developments of this conservationist tendency.
Additionally, the Indian tradition of the city offers visitors a very peculiar vision of the world, despite its religious vocation honoring the Virgin of Carmen, in Catemaco the supernatural practices of white and black magic sorcerers remains alive. All of this converges with Prehispaic ritual practices still alive in the daily life of locals and tourism centers as in the Temascal baths and ceremonies to greet the sun.
